Punjab starts action against officers following Avastin Injection probe

LAHORE: The Punjab government on Wednesday started proceedings against officials held responsible for loss of eyesight of scores of people due to administration of substandard Avastin Injections in the province.

Two-member committee headed by Secretary Special Education Saima Saeed has initiated action against 18 officers on charges of inefficiency and misconduct under the PEEDA Act, 2006.

Secretary Mines and Mineral Babar Aman Babar is the other member of the committee.

As many as 66 people lost their eyesight after being administered substandard Avastin injection in the province.

Following the tragic incident, the Punjab government constituted a committee headed by Prof Asad Aslam.

The said committee identified 18 drug controllers, deputy drug controllers and pharmacists after three and a half month investigation.

As per the inquiry report, the drug inspectors failed to stop the usage of illegally supplied Avastin injection in their respective areas.

The employees held responsible in the Avastin injection scandal have been directed to submit their response within seven days, or else have been warned of punishment under the PEEDA Act 2006.
