LAHORE – After the Eidul Azha 2026 holidays, Punjab has decided to re-impose a rule regarding early closure of markets as part of its campaign to conserve energy amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East that has disrupted supplies.
Under the provincial government’s energy conservation campaign, the temporary relaxation granted to markets and restaurants will remain valid only until June 1. After this period, commercial activities will return to the earlier prescribed schedule.
Officials said that from June 2, markets and restaurants across the province will resume operations under the old timing rules, and the special Eid-related relaxation will come to an end.
According to the new schedule, markets will be required to close by 8:00 PM. Relevant departments will monitor compliance to ensure implementation of the decision.
The government stated that the measure is part of its policy to promote efficient electricity usage and reduce energy waste, aiming to ease pressure on available energy resources.
Earlier in the day, the District Administration Islamabad has introduced revised operating hours for businesses and public venues as part of ongoing austerity measures, with the new regulations taking effect from June 1, 2026.
Under the updated schedule, markets, retail shops, and shopping malls are required to close by 8:00 PM. Restaurants, grocery stores, bakeries, and other food-related businesses will be allowed to remain open until 10:00 PM.
The new rules also apply to marriage halls, marquees, and other event venues, which must end operations by 10:00 PM.
Authorities have exempted a number of essential and specialized services from the restrictions. Pharmacies, hospitals, petrol pumps, and dairy shops will continue operating under their usual schedules. Sports facilities, call centers, and IT companies serving international clients have also been excluded from the revised timings.
