The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab has released a report detailing damages caused by monsoon rains across the province.
According to the report, 29 people have died, and 203 others sustained injuries during rain-related incidents this year.
Most fatalities occurred due to the collapse of mud houses, lightning strikes and electrocution. The heavy rains also caused property damage, with 52 houses partially affected, while six livestock animals were killed in various incidents.
PDMA Director General Umar Abbas has directed district administrations to remain on high alert during the third spell of monsoon rains, warning of possible urban flooding and flash floods due to continued rainfall.
He said that, following the instructions of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, all injured individuals were being provided with necessary medical care and treatment. He stated that the Punjab government was providing financial assistance ranging from Rs1 million to Rs5 million to families of those who lost their lives in monsoon-related incidents under its relief policy.
Umar Abbas also instructed deputy commissioners to ensure strict enforcement of Section 144 around rivers, streams and other water channels to reduce the risk of accidents. He urged citizens to take precautionary measures during the rainy season and avoid living in unsafe, fragile or poorly constructed houses.
The PDMA director general noted that the majority of deaths were caused by the collapse of roofs and structures of old and dilapidated buildings. He advised parents to ensure children stay away from electricity wires, power poles and low-lying areas during rainfall.
He stressed that adopting safety measures and following official advisories could help prevent loss of life and property during the monsoon season.
