LAHORE – In response to the recent steep increase in petroleum prices, the Punjab government has announced that public transport in all cities will now be available free of charge.
Commuters will no longer need to purchase tickets for services including the Orange Line Train, Metro Bus, Speedo Bus, and Green Electro Bus.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif also revealed additional support measures for farmers and motorcycle owners.
Farmers will receive a diesel subsidy of Rs100 per liter for each acre, while registered motorcycle riders will be granted Rs100 for every 20 liters of fuel purchased.
These measures follow a significant hike in fuel costs by the federal government, which raised petrol prices by Rs137.23 per liter to Rs458.41 and high-speed diesel by Rs184.49 to Rs520.35 per liter.
The petrol levy has also been increased from Rs106 to Rs160.61 per liter as part of the federal revenue plan for the current fiscal year.
Authorities stated that these steps are intended to offer immediate financial relief to citizens and farmers who are facing hardship due to the rising cost of fuel.
