ISLAMABAD – The Punjab government is taking key steps towards eco-friendly transport with electric buses for the other two cities.

Maryam Nawaz-led provincial authorities will officially start the process of procuring electric buses for Faisalabad and Bahawalpur, to tackle the region’s public transport shortages and address growing concerns over traffic congestion, smog, and growing pollution.

These two cities of around 5 million will have electric buses in the coming months as public transport remains at focus under the incumbent government. Punjab Transport Company (PTC) will lead the project on December 30, when a pre-proposal meeting will finalize the prequalification process for participating firms.

This will allow qualified companies to enter the international competitive bidding phase, following the rules set out by provincial authorities.

E-buses are set to offer eco-friendly alternative to traditional modes of transport in country’s most populated region Punjab, as the recent years saw massive air pollution. This project is part of Punjab government’s broader strategy to improve urban mobility while reducing the region’s carbon footprint.

Meanwhile, companies interested in participating in tender process will have to undergo stern rules. To qualify, firms must have a minimum net worth of $200 million, an annual turnover of $600 million specifically from bus manufacturing, and at least five years of experience producing buses that are 7.5 meters or longer.

Punjab Transport Company is looking to get buses from China, UK, and several EU nations to ensure that the buses meet international quality standards and are suitable for urban routes in Punjab.
