LAHORE – The Punjab Home Department has imposed Section 144 across the province, introducing a 60-day ban on swimming in rainwater and natural water bodies, as well as unauthorised boating, to reduce the risk of drowning during the ongoing monsoon season.
An official notification made it clear that bathing in rainwater accumulated on streets, roads, open spaces, and other public areas has been prohibited. The order also imposes a complete ban on swimming in dams, rivers, canals, ponds, lakes, and distributaries across Punjab.
In addition, unauthorised boating in these water bodies has been prohibited for the same period.
Officials said the restrictions have been introduced as a precautionary measure to protect lives amid persistent heavy rainfall. Monsoon showers have caused water to accumulate in low-lying areas, while water levels in rivers, dams, canals, ponds, and lakes have risen significantly, increasing the danger of drowning.
The Home Department warned that children and young people are particularly vulnerable to accidents caused by swimming in rainwater or entering swollen water bodies during the rainy season.
The restrictions have been imposed by the Punjab Home Secretary under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898.
District administrations and law enforcement agencies have been directed to strictly enforce the notification, while authorities have also been instructed to launch a comprehensive public awareness campaign to inform residents about the safety measures and the temporary ban.
