ISLAMABAD – Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Saturday officially revoked the party membership of Sher Afzal Marwat due to serious violations of party discipline.

The decision was announced in a notification from PTI’s Additional Secretary General Firdous Shamim Naqvi, which cited Marwat’s breaches as the basis for his termination.

To investigate these allegations, a four-member inquiry committee was established.

Marwat received a show-cause notice last month regarding his conduct, but the committee deemed his response inadequate.

Barrister Gohar, the chairman of PTI, expressed uncertainty about the status of Marwat’s membership, saying that he was not informed about the termination.

Gohar said his intention to consult with the party’s founder regarding this matter, expressing confusion over who was responsible for making such decisions. He claimed that the founder had not authorized the termination and that proper procedure had not been followed.

In a previous move, Marwat’s membership was suspended due to alleged breaches of party discipline, as outlined in a notification from PTI Secretary General Omar Ayub.

The inquiry committee was tasked with examining the allegations against Marwat, which included claims that his public comments had damaged the party’s reputation and undermined relationships with other members.

In May, the party had issued a show-cause notice to Marwat, following his public criticism of fellow leaders. The notice specified that Marwat had made irresponsible statements that contradicted the party’s established positions, despite being instructed by the PTI founder to refrain from such actions. Marwat, who represents the NA-41 constituency in the National Assembly, was also accused of straining relationships with party colleagues through his words and actions.

This disciplinary action came after Marwat’s recent comments about Saudi Arabia, which led to his removal from key party committees on the founder’s orders.

Previously, he had criticized senior party figures for his removal from the National Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee, suggesting that Senator Shibli Faraz had informed the party founder about concerns raised by the Saudi ambassador regarding his nomination.

Marwat has also alleged that Saudi Arabia played a role in the downfall of the PTI government in 2022 through a no-confidence motion.
