Earlier this week, General Syed Aamer Raza took charge as the first Commander National Strategic Command (CNSC) and held a meeting with Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of the Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir.
A press release issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said CNSC Raza was presented a guard of honour upon taking charge at the General Headquarters (GHQ).
On July 24, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had promoted him to the rank of a four-star general and appointed him as CNSC.
Following the guard of honour, the ISPR said CNSC Raza presented a wreath at the martyrs’ monument and paid tribute to them.
The role of Commander National Strategic Command was introduced through the 27th Constitutional Amendment, which brought changes to Article 243 of the Constitution.
Under the amendment, the position of Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee was removed and replaced with new roles, including the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and Commander National Strategic Command (CNSC). The legislation also increased the constitutional authority of senior military officials and provided legal protections for five-star military officers.
According to the revised framework, the prime minister will appoint the CNSC for an initial three-year period based on the recommendation of the CDF. The prime minister will also have the authority to set the terms of service, conditions, and regulations related to the position.
The law further allows the CNSC to receive a second three-year term if the prime minister approves the reappointment on the recommendation of the CDF.
