Politicians, civil society highlight need for intra party democracy among political parties

At a roundtable conference organized by the Pakistan Institute of Legislative Development and Transparency (PILDAT), in collaboration with Friedrich Ebert Stiftung-Pakistan on Internal Democracy of Political Parties of Pakistan, political parties, media, academia and civil society stressed the need for promotion of intra-party democracy in Pakistan.
The roundtable conference took place to address important questions like: How important is democracy within political parties? Why is intra-party democracy not given importance by people, as most popular parties are the least democratic? And How can political parties be institutionalized instead of being lengthened shadow of their leaders?
Key Representatives from major political parties included Senior Vice President, PTI, Arshad Dad, former MNA Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhary and former Chairman Senate and Secretary General, PPP, Syed Nayyer Hussain Bokhari.
Deputy Secretary General JUI-F Aslam Khan Ghauri, JI Naib Amir Mian Muhammad Aslam, and Senator Mir Tahir Bizenjo from NP also participated in the discussion that took place on the occasion.
Senior politician Afrasiab Khattak, former Senator and former member ANP, Wazir Ahmed Jogezai, former Deputy Speaker National Assembly of Pakistan, Dr Niaz Murtaza, Senior fellow UC Berkeley, Ayaz Wazir, former Ambassador and Lt Gen (R)Talat Masood, former Defence Secretary also took part in the debate on the occasion.
