Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman have agreed to remain in close contact and meet soon amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.
The understanding was reached during a telephone conversation on Sunday, according to the Prime Minister’s Office.
PM Shehbaz condemned recent Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia’s civilian and economic infrastructure, expressing Pakistan’s full solidarity with the Saudi leadership and people. He said he, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir and Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar would continue efforts to ease regional tensions and promote peace and stability.
The Saudi crown prince appreciated Pakistan’s steadfast support for Saudi Arabia and its diplomatic efforts to advance regional peace.
The call followed Saudi Arabia’s temporary closure of its 1,200-kilometre East-West oil pipeline after a drone attack. The pipeline has been a key alternative export route while the Strait of Hormuz remains largely disrupted by the ongoing conflict.
Saudi authorities also reported injuries and property damage from a Houthi projectile in the Jazan region. Riyadh has so far refrained from retaliation following a request from Iraq’s prime minister.
