ISLAMABAD – Shehbaz Sharif, Pakistan’s newly elected Prime Minister, paid his first visit to victims of the Gwadar, and interacted with those who bore the brunt of devastating rains.
A day after swearing in as the country’s prime minister, Sharif arrived on a visit to flood-hit areas in Balochistan, where he heard plights of affectees and announced aid for them.
In his announcement, the premier announced that the families of each person who died in disaster will get Rs2 million, and families whose houses were damaged will get Rs7.5 lac each. Those injured will receive half million, and those with partially destroyed houses will receive Rs3lac.
Furthermore, an additional Rs400 million will be earmarked for repairing damaged boats, and local infrastructure. The PM also distributed aid cheques and assured full support for the people of port city.
Parts of Balochistan including Gwadar witnessed devastating rains on February 26, resulting in five deaths, extensive damage to houses and roads, and widespread flooding of land.
The government imposed flood emergency there and rescue efforts were hindered by flooded roads.
Streets and neighborhoods in Gwadar remain flooded in aftermath of massive rains. Provincial Disaster Management Authority reported that around 100 houses were destroyed in Kharan, Kech, and Gwadar districts due to the rains that began last month.
The recent spell of rain and snowfall resulted in dozens of deaths and scores of injuries.
