ISLAMABAD -As if soaring living costs were not enough, Pakistanis have been handed another fuel price increase on Friday. The prices of both petrol and high-speed raised by around Rs5 per litre, ensuring motorists and businesses have yet another reason to tighten their belts.
According to the latest notification, petrol has become Rs3.66 per litre more expensive, taking the new price to Rs335.18 per litre, up from Rs331.52 per litre. High-speed diesel (HSD) has also seen an increase of Rs4.80 per litre, with the new rate fixed at Rs383.46 per litre, compared with the previous Rs378.66 per litre.
The latest revision is expected to ripple through the economy, because when fuel prices go up, almost everything else usually follows. While motorcycle and car owners prepare to spend more at petrol pumps, transporters, farmers and businesses relying on diesel-powered trucks, buses, tractors and machinery are also expected to face higher operating costs.
That, in turn, could translate into more expensive groceries, higher transport fares and increased prices of everyday essentials—giving inflation yet another helping hand just when consumers were hoping for some relief.

Fuel prices posted the sharpest weekly increases, with high-speed diesel surging 15.87% and petrol rising 5.23%. The steep hike is expected to drive up transportation and logistics expenses, which could eventually push the prices of goods and everyday services even higher.
Food inflation also gathered pace during the week, with tomatoes recording the biggest increase at 39.92%. Egg prices rose 7.31%, while potatoes became 3.70% more expensive. Meanwhile, the price of LPG increased by 0.91%, and consumers also paid more for garlic, beef, and several other household essentials.
Overall, the weekly inflation trend remained upward, as the prices of many essential commodities increased. Twenty-one items showed no change in price, while only eight commodities registered a decline over the week.
