LAHORE – After the worst defeat in the T20 World Cup 2024,  Babar Azam would not be given captaincy of the Test format, the sources close to the development said on Saturday.

Following poor performance as captain in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, there are reports that the Pakistan Cricket Board has decided to keep Babar Azam away from the captaincy in the two-match Test series against Bangladesh.

PCB Chairman Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi, on the recommendation of a seven-member selection committee, had handed over the captaincy of the T20 team to Babar Azam, replacing Shaheen Afridi, and entrusted him with the leadership of the white-ball team until the Champions Trophy.

It was expected that the authorities intended to give Babar Azam the captaincy in the two-Test series against Bangladesh, which is part of the ICC Test Championship.

However, after the poor performance in the World Cup, the board has.now decided to trust Shan Masood for the leadership of the Test team instead of considering Babar Azam.

It may be mentioned here that former Australian fast bowler Jason Gillespie will be the coach of the Pakistan team in the Test format.
