Patriotism above politics: Pakistan’s defining hour

Brig Naseem Akhtar (r)

EVERY nation reaches moments in its history when its survival, unity and credibility depend on one thing, above all, the strength of its patriotism.

When citizens rise above social and political divides to work toward a common future rather than narrow interests, the nation discovers its true strength. Patriotism, when free from partisan ambition and external influence, becomes the glue that binds society, drives progress and protects sovereignty. Pakistan today stands at a defining crossroads. Economic uncertainty, political polarization and external pressures have unsettled our collective sense of direction. Governance remains inconsistent, shaped by a democratic framework often misaligned with our social realities and dominated by elite interests. These internal challenges are compounded by regional and global exploitation, making the situation even more complex.

What we face is not merely a crisis of governance or economy, but a deeper challenge to our national consciousness. The disillusionment among the youth, the flight of talent and rising frustration reflect a dangerous erosion of confidence. To move forward, we must revive our spirit of unity and pride, reminding ourselves that our greatest strength has never been measured in wealth or power, but in the unwavering love of our people for their homeland. Patriotism must rise above politics and personal ambitions. It should surpass party loyalties, tribal affiliations and temporary alliances. Yet today, devotion to political figures too often overshadows loyalty to Pakistan itself. Patriotism is frequently exploited as a cover for narrow political interests or personal gain. True love for the country cannot be measured by blind allegiance to any leader or faction, for such attitudes only erode our unity.

Equally concerning is the growing foreign interference in our political landscape, where some leaders appear to prioritize external agendas over Pakistan’s sovereignty. Such conduct undermines the very foundations of our state. True patriotism means placing the country’s well-being above the success of any individual or group. When political competition turns into a battle of egos, it is always the nation that suffers. Pakistan was not created to serve factions or elites. It was founded on ideals of dignity, independence and justice. That spirit must be revived, not through slogans or blame, but through sincere commitment to the country’s stability, progress and honour. In a world of shifting alliances and global power games, Pakistan must remain alert to international manipulations that exploit our internal discord. Foreign interests, however friendly they appear, pursue their own strategic objectives. A patriotic Pakistan can safeguard its sovereignty only when its citizens think critically, remain united and place national interest above external temptations.

History teaches us that nations fall not when attacked from abroad, but when divided within. The preservation of national unity through genuine patriotism is our first line of defence. Patriotism is not the duty of soldiers or leaders alone; it belongs to every citizen. It lives in the honesty of a teacher shaping young minds, the integrity of a judge ensuring justice and the dedication of a civil servant performing duty with sincerity. Every Pakistani who works faithfully strengthens the nation’s foundation. The youth of Pakistan, in particular, hold the key to this patriotic revival. Instead of being disillusioned by politics or disheartened by crisis, they must channel their passion into nation-building. A nation’s future is written by those who believe in it, even when the odds are steep.

True patriotism unites; it does not divide. It lifts the nation with love and purpose, not hate or rivalry. It serves principle, not power. At this critical moment, Pakistan needs every citizen, regardless of ethnicity, sect or politics, to remember that our future is shared. Only through unity can we move forward. Governments change and leaders come and go, but Pakistan endures. True patriotism, free from partisanship, personal gain and external influence, is the force that unites society, drives progress and protects our sovereignty. When we place the nation above politics and ambition, we honour the sacrifices that built Pakistan and uphold the hopes of generations yet to come. Genuine patriotism is not blind loyalty; it is enlightened devotion. It demands placing Pakistan’s enduring welfare above short-term interests. It is the courage to confront wrongdoing, the strength to defend what is just and the resolve to preserve national unity at all costs. In these testing times, every Pakistani must ask a simple question: “Am I serving my own interests or am I serving Pakistan?” The answer to that question will define our future.
