RUSSIAN Ambassador to Pakistan Albert P Khorev has said that Pakistan and Russia are working to establish the first freight rail links connecting Moscow with Faisalabad and Karachi, opening the prospect of a new and more efficient trade route between the two countries. He said both sides were working to finalise contractual arrangements and identify potential commercial users, while the possibility of involving Belarus was also being considered.
The proposed rail links carry considerable significance for Pakistan’s efforts to strengthen regional connectivity and expand its trade footprint. Faisalabad, one of the country’s major industrial and textile centres, could gain improved access to Russian and wider Eurasian markets, while Karachi, through its ports and commercial infrastructure, could serve as a key gateway for the movement of goods. The initiative also reflects the improvement in Pakistan-Russia relations over the years. The relationship has been on an upward trajectory, with both countries expanding cooperation in trade, energy, agriculture, defence and regional connectivity. Growing political engagement and increasing economic interaction have created a favourable environment for developing more practical and mutually beneficial projects. The proposed freight corridors can give further impetus to this positive trend. A dependable rail connection would encourage businesses in Pakistan and Russia to explore new markets, develop supply chains and increase the volume and diversity of bilateral trade. The possible participation of Belarus could add another dimension to the project by linking Pakistan more closely with the wider Eurasian region. Although Ambassador Khorev noted that the project had faced delays because of geopolitical tensions in the region during 2025 and early 2026, the renewed efforts to finalise arrangements demonstrate that both sides remain committed to taking the initiative forward. Our authorities should continue working closely with Russia to ensure the early and successful implementation of these routes. The Moscow-Faisalabad and Moscow-Karachi freight links can open new avenues of cooperation and significantly boost economic and trade relations, while also strengthening Pakistan’s role as an important link between South Asia and the wider Eurasian region.
