ISLAMABAD – Electricity consumers across Pakistan may face another increase in power tariffs as the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has sought a hike of Rs2.56 per unit under the monthly fuel price adjustment mechanism.
According to details released by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), the CPPA has formally submitted an application seeking the increase in electricity prices based on fuel costs for September.
NEPRA is scheduled to hear the application on October 29, when the proposed adjustment will be considered.
According to the application, the average fuel cost of electricity generation during September stood at Rs10.02 per unit, compared with the estimated cost of Rs7.46 per unit.
The difference has prompted the CPPA to seek an additional charge of Rs2.56 per unit through the monthly fuel price adjustment mechanism.
The proposed increase has not yet been approved and will depend on NEPRA’s decision following the hearing.
The CPPA’s data showed that the total cost of electricity generation during September reached Rs127.87 billion.
The breakdown of generation costs included:
Local coal: Rs7.95 billion
Imported coal: Rs37.14 billion
Diesel: Rs13.26 billion
Furnace oil: Rs11.81 billion
-Local gas: Rs13.89 billion
Liquefied natural gas (LNG): Rs31.93 billion
According to CPPA figures, electricity distribution companies (DISCOs) supplied a combined total of 12.76 billion units of electricity to consumers during September.
The proposed adjustment is part of the monthly mechanism through which changes in fuel costs are reflected in electricity bills.
