MIANWALI – Pakistan is all set to start the construction of its largest nuclear power plant, Chashma Nuclear Power Project Unit-5 (C-5), today (December 30).

A ceremony will be held where the pouring of concrete into the foundation slab of 1200 megawatt power plant will mark the formal beginning of the construction.

High ranked officials both from China and Pakistan will attend the ceremony to witness the first concrete pour process.

The development comes after Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority (PNRA) granted construction licence for the country’s largest nuclear power plant.

The Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) had submitted the application to obtain the licence in April this year. Various documents such as preliminary safety assessment report were attacked with the application.

PAEC operates six nuclear power plants with a total capacity of 3,530 MW. Like all the six power plants, C-5 is also being constructed with assistance from China, marking another milestone in friendship of the neighbouring countries.

Chashma Nuclear Power Generating Station (CNPGS) site already hosts four NPPs namely C-1 & C-2 of 325 MW each besides C-3 & C-4 of 340 MW each.

Once it is completed, the C-5 power plant will have the capacity to generate 1200 MW electricity.

It is recalled that the ground-breaking ceremony for the Chashma Nuclear Power Project Unit-5 was held on July 14, 2023.
