LAHORE – Pakistan cricket team management, in collaboration with the National Selection Committee, on Thursday started preparations for the upcoming World Cup, initiating the process with a keen focus on the series against the Kiwis.
The objective is to systematically evaluate and integrate new talent into the team.
The upcoming five-match T20 International series against New Zealand will serve as a crucial testing ground, with the top-order batsmen Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan, slated to play three matches each.
This approach ensures a meticulous assessment of emerging players, with a conscious effort to manage player workload through planned rest periods.
In line with the decisions taken, the dynamic left-handed batter Saim Ayub will open in matches where Babar Azam is at the crease. Conversely, when Mohammad Rizwan takes the opening position, Babar Azam is recommended to bat at number four, strategically diversifying the batting lineup.
Under the leadership of Wahab Riaz, the Selection Committee has unveiled Pakistan’s 17-member squad for the upcoming T20 series against New Zealand. Osama Mir, Mohammad Abbas Afridi, and Hasibullah are making their debut in the squad. Besides it, Saud Shakeel, Azam Khan, and Ibrar Ahmed make a return to the team, bringing a blend of experience and fresh talent.
Fakhar Zaman is designated to bat at number four in the T20 matches, followed by Iftikhar Ahmed at number five and Azam Khan at number six. The unique strategy involves Azam Khan taking on the wicket-keeping role in matches where he plays, while Mohammad Rizwan focuses on contributing in the field.
Hasibullah, recognized as the third wicketkeeper in the squad, is set to play a pivotal role in the middle order, with a specific emphasis on his batting prowess.
In a departure from past approaches, the team management has opted for a recalibration of the middle order, considering the inclusion of top performers from domestic cricket. Azam Khan, Saud Shakeel, Mohammad Abbas Afridi, and Hasibullah have been entrusted with the responsibility of making a significant impact during the challenging series against New Zealand.
Of particular note is Hasibullah, who, after delivering impressive performances in the domestic season, has earned his maiden call-up and was distinguished as the best player of the tournament in this year’s Pakistan Cup.
