PAKISTAN and Oman have always enjoyed close, cordial and fraternal relations, rooted in shared faith, common cultural values and geographical proximity. The visit of Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad bin Hamood Al Busaidi to Pakistan reflects a clear desire on both sides to build upon this historic friendship and transform it into a stronger economic and trade partnership.
The eighth session of the Pakistan-Oman Joint Ministerial Commission (JMC) has provided fresh momentum to bilateral cooperation. Both sides exchanged six agreements covering diplomatic and official passport visa exemptions, records and archives, information and broadcasting, information technology and telecommunications and news exchange and media cooperation, alongside the protocol recording the JMC session’s minutes. Equally significant is the decision to establish and operationalize joint working groups in trade and investment, agriculture, oil and gas, labour and human resource development. These mechanisms can help identify opportunities, resolve practical obstacles and ensure that decisions taken at official meetings lead to tangible outcomes. The proposed business-to-business investment and promotion forum in Pakistan should further encourage private-sector partnerships and open new avenues for trade, investment and employment. The warmth of Pakistan-Oman relations is also reflected in the affection successive Omani rulers have shown towards Pakistan. The late Sultan Qaboos bin Said regarded Pakistan as a close and trusted partner. His reliance on Pakistani professionals, experts and engineers during Oman’s early development years remains a lasting testament to the confidence and goodwill that have characterized this relationship. Such a legacy deserves to be further strengthened in the present day. Both countries possess considerable potential to expand cooperation in trade, energy, agriculture, technology, tourism, maritime affairs and skilled labour. Greater business interaction, improved connectivity and regular consultations can help convert shared aspirations into mutual prosperity. We are confident that both sides will sustain and deepen their engagement at all levels, further strengthening cooperation in areas of mutual interest and bringing the peoples of Pakistan and Oman closer together.
