The General Secretariat of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) joins the international community in celebrating the World Humanitarian Day, which falls on 19 August of each year. This day has been always an opportunity for all stakeholders to recognize the efforts and sacrifices of the humanitarian workers while performing their duties but continue to provide support to save and protect the lives of those most in need.
The General Secretariat notes that the World Humanitarian Day this year coincides with exceptional difficult circumstances due to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus pandemic and its negative repercussions, which call for intensifying and coordinating effective efforts to mitigate the negative effects of this pandemic in all its health, economic, social and humanitarian dimensions. In this regard, it asserts its commitment to continue strengthening the capacities of the least developed Member States to confront the pandemic, especially in the health sector.
On this occasion, the General Secretariat reaffirms its commitment to promoting joint Islamic action and Islamic solidarity. It asserts that this is important to address the humanitarian crises in Member States, develop humanitarian action mechanisms to face various challenges in the humanitarian field, and coordinate with Member States, relevant institutions and organs, especially the Islamic Solidarity Fund, with regard to relief efforts.
It is also important to mobilize resources for humanitarian assistance and establish strategic partnerships with the humanitarian community in line with the OIC’s principles and goals.—PR
