ISLAMABAD – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted nearly normal rainfall and normal to slightly above normal temperatures for Pakistan during March 2024.

Synoptic Situation:

Considering the positive phase of the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), which is expected to persist along with the prevailing neutral phase of Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), the climatic outlook of Pakistan in the forecast month is as follows:

Monthly Rainfall Outlook:

Overall a tendency for near normal rainfall is expected in most parts of the country during March 2024. However, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, northern Punjab and Kashmir may get slightly above normal rainfall during the month.

Monthly Temperature Outlook:

The daytime maximum temperatures are expected to remain normal to slightly above normal. Warmer than normal minimum temperatures are expected nationwide with maximum departure over northern parts of the country.

Impacts:

Due to the above normal temperatures, the Rabi crops including wheat will get ready for an earlier harvest especially in the lower half of the country. An increase in temperature will be supportive for onset of pollen season in major cities like Islamabad and Lahore. Spatial temperature gradient may cause strong winds, dust storm, and hailstorm. A moderate amount of water will be available for standing crops and vegetables.
