ISLAMABAD – Prices of three phase and single phase smart electricity meters have recorded a significant drop, providing much-needed relief to consumers across the country.
The cut in prices of smart meters was acknowledged by Federal Minister for Power Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari who attributed it to the transparent and competitive procurement.
The minister said the prices of smart meters for power distribution companies (Discos) have witnessed a decline of up to 40 percent.
Three Phase Smart Meter Price
Leghari said the price of a three-phase smart meter has been dropped by around Rs20,000, taking the rate to Rs25,000 from Rs45,000.
Single Phase Meter Price
Similarly, the price of a single-phase smart meter has been cut by Rs7,000. These prices are exclusive of applicable taxes.
The minister highlighted that enhanced planning by the Power Division and positive amendments in the Pakistan Engineering Council’s regulations played a key role in attracting strong participation from international firms.
He added that the removal of entry barriers, coupled with the bulk purchasing of smart meters by power distribution companies, led to a reduction in prices, as the cost of raw materials and supplies decreased.
Furthermore, Leghari pointed out that ongoing monitoring and the establishment of clear, competitive standards for smart meters also contributed to lowering prices.
According to the minister, the anticipated annual savings of Rs 150 billion would result from replacing faulty and outdated meters by power distribution companies.
