Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik revealed a massive surge in fuel prices, with petrol now at Rs458.4 per litre and high-speed diesel (HSD) soaring to Rs520.35. The energy ministry confirmed the steep hike, which includes petrol rising by Rs137.24, diesel by Rs184.49, and kerosene by Rs34.08 to Rs457.80 per litre. These new rates will take effect from Friday, putting millions of Pakistanis on high alert.
The dramatic increase comes amid a global fuel crisis triggered by the US-Israeli war with Iran, ongoing since February 28. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had repeatedly rejected proposed hikes, including Rs95 per litre for petrol and Rs203 for diesel, in an attempt to shield citizens. Previous interventions included a Rs55 per litre hike in March and austerity measures aimed at cushioning the blow.
To ease the burden, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb unveiled a targeted subsidy program. Two-wheelers will receive Rs100 per litre, capped at 20 litres per month for three months. Small farmers will get a one-time Rs1,500 per acre, while HSD subsidies for inter-city and goods transport will also be Rs100 per litre, reviewed monthly. Trucks carrying 80-85% of food items will get Rs70,000, large transport vehicles Rs80,000, and inter-city buses Rs100,000 per month. Subsidies for low-income train travelers are also planned, and market timings will be revised next week in consultation with provinces.
A high-level meeting, including the prime minister and military officials, confirmed that relief measures would focus on those most in need, showing the government’s “difficult but necessary” approach amid unprecedented global energy turmoil.
