Provincial Energy Minister, Nasir Hussain Shah, spearheads efforts to formulate a provincial policy for the production of liquid gas and fertilizers from Thar coal. During a high-level meeting chaired by Minister Nasir Hussain Shah, it was decided to draft a policy at the provincial level to facilitate the production of liquid gas and fertilizers utilizing Thar coal reserves.
The meeting, held at the Energy Department’s office, included key officials such as Dr. Farid A. Malik, Asif Mangi, and Umeer Ali Qaimkhani from the Sindh Coal Authority. The attendees were briefed extensively on coal gasification, with the consultant presenting a report highlighting Thar coal’s suitability for gasification based on international laboratory tests conducted in South Africa.
It was revealed that adopting coal gasification could potentially save the country up to $500 million annually in foreign exchange by reducing gas imports. Furthermore, leveraging Thar’s vast coal reserves, estimated at 175 billion tons, could halve the nation’s energy import bill and mitigate environmental pollution associated with traditional energy sources. Minister Nasir Hussain Shah also pledged to engage with the Federal Minister for Energy to expedite coal gasification initiatives.
