ISLAMABAD – Authorities have temporarily closed the Murree Expressway for traffic due to heavy snowfall to avoid any untoward incident.
The National Highways and Motorway Police in a statement said all types of vehicles have been stopped from entering the expressway from the Phagran Toll Plaza toward Murree as a precautionary measure to ensure public safety.
Officials have urged the public to avoid unnecessary travel and cooperate with authorities until weather and road conditions improve.
The closure is aimed at preventing accidents and easing congestion caused by the ongoing snowfall.
Reports said Murree has received nearly one and half feet snow while it was recorded two feet in Galyat region.
With a growing number of visitors heading to Murree, local authorities have intensified efforts to manage traffic flow and ensure public safety.
The District Police Officer (DPO) has personally been present on the ground, overseeing operations, encouraging police teams, and supervising both traffic control and emergency response activities.
Figures shared by Murree Police show a sharp rise in vehicle movement. By 9:20 pm on Thursday, approximately 10,741 vehicles had entered the district, while 9,544 had left.
Within the main city areas, 9,551 vehicles arrived and 7,469 exited, resulting in around 2,082 vehicles remaining inside the city.
During the past 24 hours, total incoming traffic climbed to 11,339 vehicles, with about 2,278 vehicles currently located in more crowded parts of the town.
As forecasts indicate an approaching snowstorm, the DPO has issued safety instructions for travelers. Motorists have been directed to use snow chains to reduce the risk of slipping on icy roads and to keep their fuel tanks topped up so vehicle heaters can operate during potential delays.
