Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has pledged that his government will honor the views of both assembly members and the people of Sindh concerning the proposed amendments to the IRSA (Indus River System Authority) Act. Speaking to the media after offering prayers at Mazar-e-Quaid on Wednesday, Shah emphasized the same approach taken with the Kalabagh Dam issue would be applied in this matter.

He was accompanied by Sindh Governor Mohammad Kamran Tissori and members of his cabinet. “We, the PPP government in Sindh, have consistently represented the best interests of our people, whether in the case of the Kalabagh Dam or now with the IRSA Act,” Shah said.

He reaffirmed that the opinions of the assembly and citizens would be treated with respect and sincerity. Murad Shah further highlighted that the Sindh Assembly had already passed a resolution opposing the proposed amendments to the IRSA Act, saying it reflects public sentiment.

He also pointed out that the assembly has long advocated for the enforcement of the 1991 water accord, a vital issue for the province. Discussing recent challenges, Shah said climate change has led to above-average rainfall in the region, severely damaging road infrastructure across Sindh. He noted that coastal areas like Badin and Sujawal have been flooded, while hill torrents from the Khirthar Range on the left bank of the river have caused further destruction. Shah assured that the government is actively assessing the extent of the damage so that reconstruction efforts can begin as soon as possible.

The chief minister concluded by reiterating his government’s commitment to addressing both immediate concerns and long-term challenges, particularly when it comes to water rights and the environment. The Chief Minister stated that the Mayor of Karachi through a letter had requested sanction of special funds to repair the damaged infrastructure in the city. He mentioned that he would release the funds but expressed concerns that the defective drainage system could keep damaging the roads again and again.

“I have directed the mayor to develop a plan and the feasibility of improving the city’s drainage system to permanently resolve the issue.
