The Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan leaders on Saturday felt outraged after Yadgar-e-Shuhada, a monument built to honour the party’s killed workers in Karachi’s Azizabad, was partly demolished by unidentified men on Saturday night.
Addressing a news conference, members of the party’s Rabita Committee strongly condemned the incident and termed it an attempt to widen rifts among Sindh’s political parties on ethnic basis.
Speaking on the occasion, Federal Minister on Information Technology Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui said the extremist elements behind the incident were upset at the MQM-P’s recent efforts for the province’s urban areas.
“Who could feel threatened by Yadgar-e-Shuhada … it appears as if some elements are trying to make us fight with one another,” he remarked. However, those behind the incident would not succeed in their designs, he added.
The monument, he said, was representative of the party’s ideology of standing up for the weak and innocent. “Today MQM-P’s ideology has come under attack,” he said. Siddiqui warned the party’s detractors against mistaking their “innocence” for weakness or cowardice. He also assured families of the martyrs that the monument will be rebuild at the same place brick for brick.
