Allama Iqbal Knighted by King George V
The unmatchable contributions of Dr Allama Iqbal to literature and philosophy were recognized on global stage when King George V of Britain bestowed title “Sir” upon him in the 1920s.
Humble Beginnings and Family Support
The Poet of the East was born into a modest family, with his father, Sheikh Noor Muhammad, working as a tailor.
Despite his humble background, Iqbal’s parents prioritized his education, and it was his brother, Atta Muhammad, who financially supported his higher education, working as a contractor for British armed forces.
Iqbal’s Legacy in Germany
The intellectual journey of Pakistani national icon took him to Germany, where he studied philosophy and German literature.
His time in the German state of Baden-Württemberg left lasting mark on the city, where Iqbal Ufer, a street running along the Neckar River, was named in his honor.
Iqbal’s Kashmiri Roots
Several historians linked Iqbal’s identity with Kashmir. His ancestors were said to be from village of Kulgam. Iqbal often reflected on this heritage, and it played a significant role in his poetry. His works like Ek Falsafah Zada Sayyid-zade Ke Naam revealed his deep connection to his ancestral roots.
Three or Four Wives?
Iqbal’s married multiple times, he first tied known at early age of 18 to Karim Bibi, with whom he had two children. The couple later separated in early 1900.
In 1914, Iqbal then married Mukhtar Begum, but she tragically passed away during childbirth in 1924. His third marriage was to Sardar Begum, with whom he had a son, Javed, and a daughter, Muneera.
Some historians mentioned that he married four times.
