As part of its settler colonialism agenda in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), Modi-led Hindutva government has stepped up the process of granting land ownership rights to non-state subjects.

The Indian government is set to grant land ownership rights to Hindu refugees who had migrated from Pakistan post partition in 1947 and settled in different areas of IIOJK.

In this regard, media reports say that the Indian Home Ministry officials have discussed the matter with the revenue department officials of IIOJK who have initiated the exercise to work out modalities of allotment of ownership rights to these Hindu refugees over 46,666 kanals of land in the occupied territory.

These Hindu refugees, known as West Pakistan refugees (WPRs) as they had migrated from then what was called West Pakistan, were allotted this land on May 7, 1954 in Akhnoor, R.S. Pura and Bishnah areas of Jammu district, parts of Samba district and Hiranagar in Kathua district but were not given the ownership rights as they were not the State Subjects of IIOJK.

However, after Modi-led Indian government illegally and unilaterally abrogated the special status of IIOJK on August 5, 2019, these Hindu refugees were declared as domiciles of the occupied territory in contravention of United Nations resolutions.—KMS
