The Lahore Metro Bus service resumed operations with a fleet of 55 vehicles on Wednesday after an 11 days break due to strike by the drivers against the previous contractor Albayrak over non-payment of arrears.

The suspension of the bus service from Shahdara to Gajjumatta troubled thousands of commuters in the provincial metropolis.

The drivers, who had also demanded experience certificates and gratuity, ended the protest after the new contractor VEDA Transit Solutions took over the charge.

The drivers said that they moved the court for getting their issues resolved with previous contractors. The Punjab government had signed an agreement with local company Veda Transit Solutions and a group of local banks to replace the existing fleet of 64 buses running on the 27-kilometre-long track of the Lahore Metro Bus System last year.

As per the agreement, the new contractor will manage the bus fleet for the next eight years. It is pertinent to note that the Metro Bus service was launched in Lahore in February 2013.
