Our oceans are a vital ecosystem that sustain life and livelihoods and Blue Economy provides a pathway to responsibly harness these resources while ensuring environmental sustainability. The theme for the International Maritime Symposium 2024, “Realisation of Blue Economy through Prism of Sustainable Development Goals: Options for Developing Countries including Pakistan,” highlights our collective aspiration to leverage ocean potential while prioritising ecological health.

Pakistan’s prosperity is closely tied to its oceans. By embracing the Blue Economy framework, we can secure a sustainable maritime future that benefits not only our nation but also the entire region. With an extensive coastline and rich marine resources, Pakistan is positioned to unlock significant economic potential through enhanced port infrastructure, fisheries expansion, maritime trade, and coastal tourism. Our commitment to developing Gwadar Port and improving ship recycling aligns with international conventions and underscores our dedication to sustainable practices. However, addressing environmental challenges and strengthening partnerships with regional neighbours and the global community is essential.

In alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 14 focused on conserving marine resources, we bear a collective responsibility to protect our maritime environment. The health of our oceans is threatened by climate change, overfishing and pollution, which jeopardises both oceanic ecosystems and coastal communities. Tackling these challenges demands innovative solutions and strong international collaboration.
Pakistan has made notable strides in sustainability, exemplified by tripling mangrove forest cover since 1980. Pakistan Navy actively promotes marine conservation through a collaborative effort with the stakeholders.

I commend the National Institute of Maritime Affairs (NIMA) for organising this symposium and urge participants to engage in meaningful dialogue. Together, we can chart a sustainable course for our oceans and economies, ensuring a thriving future for generations to come.
