ISLAMABAD – Major General Julian Moazzam James is first Christian officer from Pakistan Army’s elite Special Service Group (SSG) and the third Christian to attain the prestigious rank of Major General in the country’s armed forces.
Hailing from Narowal district in Punjab, Major General James began his military career in the Air Defense Regiment before joining the elite SSG, a unit renowned for its rigorous training and high-risk operations. He is a proud alumnus of the 92nd Long Course, reflecting years of dedication and professional excellence.
Throughout his distinguished career, Major General James commanded SSG Brigade in Tarbela and the Air Defense Brigade in Sargodha, demonstrating tactical brilliance and leadership. He also served as Defense Attaché in Nigeria for three years, representing Pakistan’s military on the international stage. His professional training credentials include the Air Defense Staff Course, Intelligence Staff Course, Pakistan Staff Course, and the National Security War Course.
Military service runs in family. His elder brother, Farukh James, also served in the Pakistan Army, retiring with the rank of Major.
Before Major General Julian Moazzam James, only two Christian officers had achieved general officer ranks in Pakistan: Major General Noel Israel Khokhar and Major General Julian Peter, both now retired.
In total, six Christian officers have reached ranks equivalent to General in Pakistan’s armed forces, including: Air Vice Marshal Eric G. Hall (Sitara-e-Jurat and Sitara-e-Basalat), Air Vice Marshal Michael John O’Brien (Tamgha-e-Jurat and Sitara-e-Basalat), Air Admiral Norman Min Goon (Sitara-e-Basalat and Sitara-e-Imtiaz Military), late Major General Peter Julian, Major General Noel Israel Khokhar and Major General Julian Moazzam James.
This historic achievement not only marks first for Christian community in Pakistan’s armed forces but also highlights Major General James’ exceptional leadership, dedication, and trailblazing spirit. His rise to the upper echelons of the SSG underscores the Pakistan Army’s commitment to meritocracy and celebrates the diversity within its ranks.
