Maj Gen (Retd) Professor Sohail Sabir, HI (M), has assumed charge as the 13th Vice Chancellor of the University of Health Sciences (UHS) Lahore.
On his first day, Prof Sohail Sabir reviewed preparations for the Medical and Dental College Admission Test (MDCAT) 2026, scheduled across Punjab on September 20.
He visited the MDCAT Control Room, met officials involved in the examination arrangements and reviewed measures being taken to ensure a smooth and transparent test. He also sought details about the responsibilities assigned to various teams.
Prof Sohail Sabir brings extensive experience in medicine, nephrology, medical education, research and healthcare administration. He served in the armed forces from April 1985 to August 2026 and held several senior academic, clinical and administrative positions, including Professor of Medicine at Army Medical College/NUMS, Head of Medicine at Army Medical College and Pakistan Emirates Military Hospital, and senior roles in nephrology and medical education.
He holds MBBS, FCPS Medicine and FCPS Nephrology qualifications, along with FRCP qualifications from Edinburgh and London, a Master’s in Organ Transplant from Liverpool and a fellowship of the American Society of Nephrology. He also completed a clinical PhD in genetic and clinical studies of chronic kidney disease from Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University.
His previous positions include Director General Medicine at GHQ, Dean of the Armed Forces Postgraduate Medical Institute and Head of Medical Education and Continuous Professional Development at AFPGMI. He has also served as Medical Director/TQM Director in Saudi Arabia, a councillor of the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan and Director of Cochrane Pakistan.
Prof Sohail Sabir has authored 57 national and seven international publications and supervised 125 FCPS trainees in medicine, nephrology and transplant nephrology. He has also been a CPSP examiner in Medicine and Nephrology since 2011.
He has received the Hilal-e-Imtiaz (Military), Chief of Army Staff Commendation Card and Magdi Yaqub Gold Medal for Research, among other honours.
