The only infant to survive last month’s deadly fire at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) has died, the hospital confirmed on Friday.
The baby was among 15 infants in the nursery when the fire broke out on August 26, killing 14 babies. The surviving infant had been rescued by nurse Razia Noreen.
Pims Executive Director Dr Muhammad Salman said the hospital would provide an ambulance to take the deceased infant and her family to their native village in Azad Jammu and Kashmir at its own expense.
The premature infant had remained critically ill and suffered persistent health complications. It remains unclear whether the family will receive the Rs5 million compensation announced by the government after the tragedy.
An inquiry committee headed by former interior secretary Shahid Khan found “systemic and institutional failure” at Pims and held its senior management principally responsible for failing to address known fire-safety risks.
The government had also ordered criminal action against eight officials.
