ISLAMABAD – Mahmood Khan Achakzai, leader of the opposition alliance “Tehreek-e-Tahaffuz-e-Ain-e-Pakistan,” has been appointed as the Opposition Leader in the National Assembly.
National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, issued the notification for the appointment, officially making Mahmood Khan Achakzai the leader of the opposition in the National Assembly.
According to the notification, the appointment of the Opposition Leader will be effective from January 16, 2026, as per the rules of National Assembly business.
The position of Opposition Leader had been vacant following the disqualification of Omar Ayub Khan in the 9 May case.
Mahmood Khan Achakzai, the head of the Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party and leader of the opposition alliance, was nominated for the position of Opposition Leader by PTI founder Imran Khan.
Prime Minister’s Advisor on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah had earlier confirmed that the notification for Mahmood Khan Achakzai as Opposition Leader would be issued today.
Rana Sanaullah also criticized the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), stating that the party’s political activities are entirely dependent on its founder. He added that when the founder of PTI was in power, they were unwilling to engage with the opposition, and even now, while in the opposition, they are unwilling to sit with the government.
Earlier, Mahmood Khan Achakzai, the leader of the opposition alliance “Tehreek-e-Tahaffuz-e-Ain-e-Pakistan,” remarked that PTI lacks discipline, with only one leader among every 100 members.
Speaking to lawyers at the Lahore Bar presidential candidate’s camp, he noted the large turnout at the procession despite the absence of speakers or microphones.
Achakzai emphasized that, despite the challenges, the opposition stands in solidarity with PTI in difficult times, not for positions but for justice. He further stated that they have always been told to stand with the oppressed, and as heirs of movements in Pakistan, they are committed to supporting the cause of justice and people’s welfare.
He clarified that the negotiations could resolve matters if anyone was willing to acknowledge their mistakes, and the opposition alliance remains active in its pursuit of public welfare and justice, working diligently on the political front.
