LAHORE – A heartbreaking and shocking incident at Jinnah University exposed dark reality of forced marriage pressure, as reason behind a female student’s suicide attempt has finally emerged.
According to investigative sources, the injured student, Fatima Hussain, attempted suicide after being denied marriage to the person of her choice. Fatima wanted to marry her close friend, but her family strongly opposed the relationship and was pressuring her to marry another man. Continuous family pressure and strict opposition pushed the young student toward an extreme and desperate step.
Sources reveal that heated arguments had already taken place at home over Fatima’s insistence on a love marriage. Despite her resistance, the family remained firm. Moments before the suicide attempt, Fatima reportedly spoke to her friend, after which she jumped from the university rooftop in an apparent attempt to end her life.
After incident, police launched a full investigation and are also questioning Fatima Hussain’s friend as part of the inquiry.
Fatima was rushed to the General Hospital, where she remains under intensive medical care. The hospital has now released her latest medical report, which was submitted by the Chairman of the Medical Board to Principal Professor Farooq Afzal.
According to the report, Fatima’s condition remains critical, although her vital signs are currently stable. Doctors have noted improvement in her neurological condition, with her Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) level improving to 5–6. On the recommendation of the medical board, her antibiotics have been changed, and doctors have recorded better lung function compared to the previous day.
Medical teams have also completed blood and platelet transfusions, but Fatima is still on a ventilator. Doctors have announced that sedative medications will be reduced tomorrow, followed by a fresh medical examination to assess further progress.
