LAHORE – The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Friday sought a report from the relevant authorities on a petition challenging the detention of Aleema Khan, sister of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan.
Aleema’s son, along with her driver, later approached the LHC to challenge her detention.
Justice Abhar Gul Khan heard the petition on Friday. During the proceedings, lawyer Rana Mudassir argued that the detention order was unlawful and inconsistent with the facts of the case.
The counsel also told the court that medicines and clothes were not being allowed to reach Aleema in jail. He requested that the superintendent of police and deputy commissioner be summoned in person and questioned over the matter.
The lawyer further sought directions for the authorities to provide Aleema with necessary medicines and clothes.
Justice Khan observed that the issue should be addressed through a separate miscellaneous application.
A separate application was subsequently filed seeking permission for Aleema to receive medicines and clothes and to have access to her family members and lawyers. The Punjab Home Department and other officials were named as respondents.
Meanwhile, the LHC had on Thursday issued notices to the Punjab government and other respondents on petitions challenging the detention of Noreen Niazi and Uzma Khan under Section 3-MPO.
The court declined to suspend their detention orders at this stage and directed the respondents to submit their replies.
Aleema was detained in Lahore on September 20 under Section 3 of the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) Ordinance, 1960, and subsequently transferred to Kot Lakhpat Jail.
Her sisters, Noreen Niazi and Uzma Khan, were also detained under the same provision a day later following a police recommendation.
The detentions came ahead of PTI’s planned nationwide protest and long march towards Islamabad on September 27, with the party demanding Imran Khan’s release and adherence to the Constitution.
