PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has called for political reconciliation to overcome Pakistan’s political and economic crises, asserting that President Asif Ali Zardari is uniquely capable of ending political polarisation. Speaking on Benazir Bhutto’s death anniversary, he warned that polarisation is harming democracy, economy, national security and urged political forces to pursue dialogue and responsible politics in the national interest.
PPP leadership has historically championed the politics of reconciliation, dialogue and consensus-building. From Benazir Bhutto’s advocacy of democratic continuity to Asif Ali Zardari’s role during the post-2008 transition, the party has often positioned itself as a bridge-builder in moments of national crisis. Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari’s remarks once again reaffirm this tradition and rightly underline a crucial truth: Without political stability, Pakistan cannot achieve its economic or democratic aspirations.There is little disagreement with the premise that political polarisation is damaging economy and creating uncertainty that discourages investment. Countries struggling with economic distress rarely succeed without a minimum political consensus and Pakistan is no exception. In that sense, PPP’s emphasis on reconciliation is both timely and necessary.However, reconciliation cannot be achieved through statements alone. Over the past few years, calls for dialogue and consensus from PPP leaders have been frequent, particularly on major occasions. Yet, tangible and visible efforts to translate these calls into a structured political process have been largely absent. This gap between statements and action weakens the credibility of reconciliation narrative and raises questions about political will.
In our view, the PPP is uniquely positioned to move beyond words and bring both the PML-N and the opposition parties especially the PTI on table for comprehensive negotiations. For reconciliation to materialise, President Zardari should take concrete steps. These could include initiating back-channel contacts both with government and PTI leadership and outlining a limited yet clear agenda. Confidence-building measures such as advocating restraint would also be essential to bring all sides to the table.If the PPP leadership succeeds in facilitating meaningful negotiations and guiding them toward substantive outcomes, it would render an invaluable service to the nation. Such a role would not only help reduce political tensions but also create stability needed to take the country on path of economic growth. History would then remember the PPP not merely for calling for reconciliation but for delivering it, as Asif Ali Zardari is still credited for raising the unifying slogan “Pakistan Khapay”. Reconciliation is not a slogan, it is a process. And leadership is judged not by intentions expressed, but by outcomes achieved.
