University of Karachi’s Department of International Relations recently hosted its 6th seminar under the Sheikh Mutahir Ahmed Lecture Series, titled “The Middle East Crisis.” Held at the Chinese Teachers Memorial Auditorium, the event gathered experts and scholars to shed light on the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict, particularly focusing on the war-torn region of Gaza and surrounding areas. Speakers, comprising renowned international relations scholars, provided the audience with insightful knowledge and firsthand information regarding the complexities of the conflict.

They delved into the historical roots of the Israeli-Palestinian struggle, current hostilities, and the implications of recent Iranian strikes on Israel. Former Ambassador Dr. Jamil Ahmed addressed the audience about Israel’s policies regarding the genocide and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians, urging reflection on Israel’s involvement in occupied territories.

He emphasized the critical role of diplomacy in conflict resolution, highlighting that wars have historically ended through treaties. Dr. Ahmed referenced the 1897 meeting in Switzerland that birthed the Zionist Movement, illustrating how Israeli political agendas shape global decisions. Dr. Ahmed stressed the urgent need for the implementation of UN resolutions 2712 and 2720 for humanitarian aid, while also highlighting how the influence of Israel in international politics hinders effective action from the United Nations, particularly through the U.S. veto power. On Iran’s role in the conflict, he warned that should Iran possess nuclear capabilities, it might pose a serious threat to Israel.

He stated that the notion of using nuclear weapons, while damaging, cannot be dismissed due to its catastrophic potential. Air Commodore (Retd) Jamal Hussain, a defense analyst, discussed the strategic military dynamics of the conflict. He noted that Israel’s prolonged military campaign stems from its objectives to neutralize Hamas and secure the release of hostages, while Hamas continues to resist, viewing the conflict as a struggle against genocide. Hussain also highlighted that, contrary to popular belief, Hamas and Hezbollah have demonstrated substantial conventional warfare capabilities, challenging Israel’s air superiority. He commended Iran’s military advancements, particularly its use of cruise and ballistic missiles, and the effectiveness of drones in recent engagements.

The seminar also addressed the implications of population displacement on Israeli strategy, with Hussain citing that 500,000 Israelis have left their homes since the onset of the conflict. He proposed that adapting Iranian drone technology could be a viable strategy for Israel to counter threats from Hamas and Hezbollah. Professor Dr. ShiastaTabbasum, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, underscored the importance of self-determination for Palestinians, urging the international community to clearly identify the war’s perpetrators and victims. Dr. Naeem Ahmed, Chairman of the Department of IR, raised concerns about the potential outcomes of a nuclear conflict between Israel and Iran, questioning the latter’s capacity to sustain a full-scale war.

Renowned journalist Tariq Abul Hassan shared his experiences covering the conflict, recounting the dangers faced by journalists in war zones and the challenges of conveying the truth amidst widespread misinformation. He emphasized the long-standing grievances of Palestinians and the strategic military capabilities of Hamas. Hassan further elaborated on the economic repercussions of the war on Israel, noting a significant decline in tourism and widespread displacement, which could ultimately burden Israel’s economy. He warned that prolonged conflict could lead to a point where even the United States, traditionally supportive of Israel, may seek to deescalate the situation due to its adverse economic impacts.

Seminar served as a crucial platform for dialogue on the intricate dynamics of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, highlighting the urgent need for diplomatic efforts and humanitarian considerations amidst ongoing hostilities.
