The spokesperson for the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has stated that the impression that no action is taken against those responsible for poor road construction in Karachi is incorrect. The reality is that KMC is actively taking action against officials, engineers, and contractors responsible for any defects found in road construction. All contractors found responsible for substandard work are being blacklisted, and relevant departmental officials have also faced action, including removal from their positions.Wahab, mentioned in a recent meeting with engineering department officials that repair work has begun for the roads damaged by recent rains.
KMC is responsible for maintaining 106 main roads and highways in Karachi, while the local town administrations are responsible for minor and internal city roads. He stated that repair work is being conducted at a cost of two billion rupees, and efforts will be made to expedite the construction and repair work across all districts. Only contractors who meet quality standards will be awarded contracts for road construction and repairs, as the city’s top priority is road construction, infrastructure, and streetlight provision. He emphasized that no further negligence or delays will be tolerated regarding road construction.
All contracts will be awarded on merit, and no recommendations, including his own, will be accepted. Contractors failing to meet specified standards will be immediately blacklisted. The Mayor stressed that both the Sindh government and the current leadership of KMC are fully aware that every penny allocated for the city’s development must be spent on developmental work. Wastage of funds due to substandard work is not in the interest of the city or its residents. Therefore, the quality of infrastructure restoration and repair work in Karachi will be ensured at all costs, so that the constructed roads are durable and the citizens can benefit from them for a long time.
