Kiran said in a social media post.

The couple reportedly performed Umrah before solemnising their marriage in the holy city. For Kiran, the occasion carried a particularly personal significance: it was her first Umrah, and she described the Nikah and pilgrimage as two extraordinary blessings coming together at the same time. In her message, she expressed gratitude for beginning married life with prayers at the Haram and asked Allah to bless their relationship with peace and goodness.

The marriage immediately became bigger than a celebrity wedding. The reason is the man Kiran has married, Mirza Ishtiaq Baig, who is not simply a businessman entering another chapter of his personal life. He is also the former husband of legendary Pakistani pop star Nazia Hassan.

Her announcement was met with an immediate wave of congratulations, while social media users quickly connected the news to Baig’s well-known past. Some celebrated Kiran’s new beginning. Others immediately began revisiting Baig’s previous marriage to Nazia Hassan, turning the announcement into a wider conversation about his personal history.

For now, however, details surrounding the couple’s private arrangements remain limited. Publicly available information centers on their Umrah, the Nikah in Makkah, Kiran’s announcement and the photographs she shared.

Mirza Ishtiaq Baig

Away from the headlines surrounding his marriages, Baig has built a substantial career in business, diplomacy and philanthropy.

He is Vice Chairman of the Baig Group of Companies, a business group with interests extending across Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates and Morocco. Its activities have included textiles, denim, IT, power, real estate and other sectors.

His relationship with Morocco goes considerably deeper than business. Baig was appointed Honorary Consul General of Morocco in Karachi in December 2006, with Sindh falling within his consular jurisdiction. Pakistan subsequently issued his presidential exequatur in February 2007.

He spent around two decades living in Morocco and has described the country as a second home. He has also been involved in strengthening commercial relations between Pakistan and Morocco, including through the Pak-Morocco Joint Business Council and related FPCCI activities.

Baig was the founding president of Make-A-Wish Foundation Pakistan, which works to fulfil the wishes of children living with serious illnesses. He has additionally received major honours, including Morocco’s Wissam Al Alaoui and Pakistan’s Sitara-i-Imtiaz and Tamgha-e-Imtiaz. He has worked as a columnist for Daily Jang, written Aaj Ki Duniya, and occasionally appeared on television as a current-affairs commentator.

But despite all of these roles, it is another part of his biography that continues to generate the strongest public interest. Nazia Hassan.

Before Kiran, There Was Nazia Hassan Nazia Hassan was one of the defining voices of Pakistani pop music. The singer, who became internationally known and was widely celebrated as Pakistan’s “Queen of Pop,” married Baig in 1995. The couple had a son, Arez Hassan, born in 1997.

What initially appeared to be a high-profile celebrity marriage eventually became surrounded by serious allegations, conflicting accounts and a long-running legal dispute.

Nazia made allegations concerning her marriage, including claims of mistreatment, infidelity and disagreements over her cancer treatment. She also made allegations concerning poisoning in testimony reported by her family.

Her brother Zohaib Hassan later repeatedly spoke about the difficulties Nazia allegedly experienced during the marriage and claimed that she wanted a divorce. In 2021, Zohaib publicly discussed what he said was Nazia’s sworn testimony in London concerning her treatment during the marriage.

Baig rejected allegations of abuse or wrongdoing and has disputed the account of the marriage presented by Nazia’s family. He called his relationship with Nazia in very different terms, saying that he loved her and maintaining that she remained his wife until her death.

That disagreement never fully disappeared. One of the most persistent disputes surrounding Baig and Nazia concerns whether they were legally divorced before her death. Nazia died in London on August 13, 2000, after suffering from lung cancer and related complications. Her family maintained that she had divorced Baig before her death. A divorce certificate was subsequently issued by a Karachi union council in 2008.

Baig disputed the document and maintained that Nazia remained his wife until she died. The dispute eventually reached the Sindh High Court.

In a 2021 petition, Baig sought cancellation of the divorce certificate, which he said had been issued eight years after Nazia’s death. The court record confirms that he challenged the certificate and maintained that he remained her lawful husband.

He has also publicly pointed to British documentation listing Nazia as his wife at the time of her death. In a 2018 interview with Dawn Images, he again said that Nazia remained his wife until her death, while Zoheb Hassan disputed that position and pointed to the divorce certificate.

Her family raised questions concerning her treatment during the marriage and allegations of possible foul play. British authorities investigated allegations surrounding her death, but the investigation did not result in criminal charges against Baig.

A later UK court case also recorded as undisputed that Nazia died on August 13, 2000, in London and that Baig maintained her death was the tragic result of cancer, while Zoheb Hassan believed Baig’s treatment of Nazia had been inappropriate and connected to her death.

Baig has rejected the allegations, while Nazia’s family has continued to speak about her experiences and their interpretation of the marriage. That history is precisely why his 2026 marriage has generated such intense interest.

Nazia was not reportedly Baig’s first wife. As per available info, he was previously married to Hazel, with whom he had a son, Imran Baig, born in 1984. He was also reportedly briefly married to Pakistani actress Shazia. Some accounts have claimed that these earlier marriages were not disclosed to Nazia’s family at the time of her marriage to Baig.

Baig has described Nazia as his third wife, while other reports count his marriages differently. There are also reports that he married again after Nazia’s death and that relationship later ended. Consequently, even the exact number of Baig’s marriages is inconsistently reported.
