Sindh government’s announcement to launch cab operations in Karachi, including an innovative ‘Pink Taxi’ service for women and an electric taxi initiative, marks a significant step in expansion and modernisation of public transport. Senior Minister Sharjeel Memon has made remarkable strides in replacing outdated and rusted bus fleet in Karachi with a modern transport system that is not only more reliable but also cost-effective for public.

The introduction of electric taxis represents a forward-thinking approach towards sustainable and environmentally friendly transport solutions. This initiative will not only reduce city’s carbon footprint but also offer an economically viable alternative to traditional fuel-powered vehicles. The launch of “Pink Taxi’ service, designed exclusively for women, will help ensure safer travel options for female passengers. This service will complement existing Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, which has already made significant improvements to public transport in Karachi. Such efforts are crucial for improving Karachi’s transport landscape, which is vital for city’s role as Pakistan’s economic hub.

A modern, integrated transport system will not only alleviate traffic congestion but also boost economic activities by providing reliable and efficient commuting options for residents and businesses alike. Whilst it is equally important to fully revive Karachi circular railway project to improve connectivity across the city, modern transport projects also need to be replicated in other major cities of the province.
