Karachiites sick of mixed-up of loadshedding, repair, maintenance

With the advent of winter, power outages in assorted residential colonies in Karachi have been rampant and unannounced. Residents of Liaquatabad particularly C-1 area, Buffer Zone, New Karachi, North Karachi, few areas in Nazimabad and North Nazimabad, Korangi industrial and residential areas, Landhi, Keamari, etc have complained to unannounced power outages during day and at night.
The sudden suspension of supply of electricity has deprived the people of drawing water through electric pumps that are common in this port city as without these electric pumps, water drawing is impossible.
As observed, half of the areas that are facing blackouts for hours during day and at night are declared as flawed areas either due to extra high burden or heavy line losses. No matter what are the reasons, residents of densely populated and almost zero ventilated homes suffer most. Residents of big residential units could afford the expenses accrued on setting up a standby power generator or uninterrupted power supply (UPS) equipment.
It is also learned that Karachi’s sole power distribution company – K-Electric is carrying on repair and maintenance and traditional copper of silver linings are being replaced with heavily insulated wire from which theft of electricity is impossible. However, this is not a situation across the board as there are pockets or areas where the load is shed to meet the losses due to heavy line losses.
When contacted, KE told Pakistan Observer that power supply in the city remained as per routine including the areas of Korangi, Liaquatabad, North Karachi, Buffer zone and Khamosh colony. The company spokesman said that in order to constantly upgrade the system and network in line with K-Electric’s commitment to ensure smooth and reliable power supply for its customers, annual preventive maintenance shutdowns were carried out in few parts of North Karachi Sector 5-C, Landhi 4C and Millat Town Block A&B.
