KARACHI – Panic gripped Karachi on Saturday after a powerful explosion followed by intense gunfire erupted near Mosmiyat Chowrangi on University Road, close to the Sindh Rangers Headquarters, triggering a massive security response and sending shockwaves across the city.
Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said members of the banned Jamaat-ul-Ahrar group targeted the main gate of a Rangers camp in Karachi’s Gulistan-e-Jauhar area late Saturday. The assailants first triggered an explosion before attempting to force their way into the compound.

Rangers personnel quickly engaged the attackers, killing three militants in the ensuing gunfight and capturing another in an injured state. The military said the arrested suspect is an Afghan national.
Pak military declared that action would be taken against those behind the assault, stressing that the fallen soldiers’ sacrifice would not go unanswered.
Pakistan has repeatedly alleged that the Afghan Taliban provides safe haven to militant groups, including the TTP, operating from Afghan territory. Kabul has consistently rejected those claims, urging Islamabad to deal with its internal security issues.
In response to cross-border militancy, Pakistan has carried out strikes against suspected militant hideouts inside Afghanistan this year, a move that has further strained relations between the two neighbors.
Islamabad has also accused India of backing militant groups based in Afghanistan, allegations that New Delhi has denied.
The Karachi attack is likely to reinforce Pakistan’s ongoing counterterrorism campaign as security forces seek to contain the growing militant threat across the country.
According to initial reports, the blast was so powerful that it was heard several kilometers away before sustained gunfire broke out in the area. Police and Rangers personnel swiftly rushed to the scene, while security agencies launched a large-scale operation.
Authorities also detained several individuals for questioning as part of the ongoing investigation. Traffic was suspended on surrounding roads, including routes leading toward Chaman Iqbal Colony, leaving commuters stranded while security personnel secured the vicinity.
Police officials later confirmed that the exchange of fire had ended, but said investigations were underway to determine the exact nature of the incident and identify those responsible.
Meanwhile, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah took immediate notice of the incident, contacting the Inspector General of Sindh and the Additional IG Karachi to receive updates. The Chief Minister also sought a detailed report on the security situation.
While some initial reports claimed that terrorists had been killed during the operation, official authorities have not yet confirmed those claims. The investigation remains ongoing, and further details are expected as security agencies continue their assessment.
The incident once again raised concerns over security in one of Karachi’s busiest corridors, with residents anxiously awaiting official confirmation about the circumstances surrounding the attack.
Residents have been urged to stay away from the affected area and follow the directions of law enforcement personnel until the situation is fully brought under control.
