KARACHI – Torrential monsoon rains hit Karachi on Friday, drenching parts of the metropolis, knocking out electricity in several neighbourhoods while more rains are expected over the weekend.
The downpour, along with strong winds, brought relief from the sweltering heat but also disrupted daily life across the city. Rainfall was reported in Manghopir, Gulshan-e-Maymar, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, North Karachi, North Nazimabad and Federal B Area, while heavy showers also swept through Saddar, M.A. Jinnah Road, II Chundrigar Road, Defence, Shahrah-e-Faisal, Tariq Road, Bahadurabad, PECHS, Nursery, Chanesar Goth, SITE Area, Mawach Goth, Baldia, Jamshed Road and Guru Mandir.
More than 100 power feeders across Karachi went down, leaving tens of thousands without power. Power outages were reported in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Jamshed Road, Naval Colony, Orangi Town, Federal B Area, Liaquatabad, North Nazimabad, Sohrab Goth, Scheme 33, Shadman, Banaras, Nazimabad and Golimar, among several other localities.
Sources said the widespread electricity outages during the rain caused severe inconvenience for residents, with citizens from various parts of the city demanding the immediate restoration of power. Meanwhile, K-Electric said its technical teams are actively working to restore electricity supply by repairing the affected feeders.
Beyond Karachi, rain was also recorded in Nooriabad and Kathore along the M-9 Motorway, highlighting the widespread impact of the active monsoon system.
As rain intensified, electricity supply was disrupted in multiple parts of the city. Gulshan-e-Maymar and Manghopir were among the first areas to lose power, while residents across several other localities also reported outages during the ongoing rainfall. According to the PMD, the weather system moved towards Karachi from the Kirthar mountain range, unleashing strong winds and widespread showers over the metropolitan city.
The meteorological department said active monsoon currents continue to penetrate southern Pakistan due to a low-pressure area (LPA) positioned over southwest Rajasthan and adjoining regions, setting the stage for more rain over the coming days.
PMD forecast another round of rain and thunderstorms for Saturday, with lightning and gusty winds expected to persist. Maximum temperatures are likely to remain between 33°C and 35°C. By Sunday, rainfall activity is expected to weaken, although scattered showers remain possible before partly sunny conditions gradually return. Temperatures are expected to hover between 33°C and 35°C.
The weather system is also expected to spread across other parts of the country, with rain-wind and thunderstorms forecast in Sindh, northeast and southern Punjab, lower Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir and northeast Balochistan.
