KARACHI has been ranked as the second riskiest city for tourists with a rating of 93.12 out of 100. According to a July 11 Forbes Adviser list of three of the riskiest cities, Per the ranking, the city had the highest personal security risk, reflecting risk from crime, violence, terrorist threats, natural disasters and economic vulnerabilities.

This is not for the first time that the city of the Quaid, which is economic hub of the country and the seat of the provincial government, is receiving bad publicity as the city was declared by the Economist Intelligence Unit last year as one of the five ‘least liveable’ cities of the world. According to the index, Karachi performed poorly on almost all indicators, including stability, education, healthcare, culture, environment and infrastructure. It is disappointing to note that the city also ranked 168th in terms of livability among a total of 172 cities in 2022. The latest ranking shows the authorities concerned made no worthwhile effort to address factors that made the city most risky and unlivable. No doubt, overall security in Karachi has improved as compared to past due to the hard work of the Pakistan Army and law-enforcing agencies but the street crime has increased manifolds due to lack of required interest by authorities concerned. Similarly, plans are drawn and packages announced to improve infrastructure of the city as well as resolve its perennial problems but ground realities have not changed. Shamefully, the city is also considered one of the dirtiest in the world due to inability of the administration to devise a workable waste management system. Apart from allocation of more funds, the city needs genuine attention by authorities concerned to make it safest and livable.
