Chairman Aim Log Ittehad party Justice (Retd) Wajihuddin has said the national institutions are at stake in the hands of commission mafia as now they have set their eyes on Pakistan Steel Mills, PIA and Railways. They need to be saved, because they are the most important institutions in the country. There were flaws in privatisation of KESC and PTCL but the incumbent government, keeping in view its performance till date, is surely to make further the mockery of this process also. Talking to media persons at his residence the other day, he said the Economic Co-ordination Committee (ECC) has approved the privatization of the Steel Mills and the matter is with the Cabinet. It is said that a total of 9,350 employees of the steel mills will be laid off on one month’s salary and with this, including the graduation and provident fund, each will be paid about Rs. 2.3 million. The former judge viewed that be it PSM, PIA or Railways, all these companies are overstaffed. Every government kept on recruiting people of its own choice in large numbers, resulting in fall of these institutions to their own burden. “As far as revival of PSM is concerned, the Pak-China Investment Bank was and will probably be ready to take up the matter. But the government has paid no attention to it. Similarly, Russia, which had set up the steel mills, also agreed to upgrade it. We must not forget that this whole affair is about acquiring the land of the steel mills and selling its structure like trash. There have been similar attempts before, but the sons of the homeland repaired the government’s malice.” Regarding the solution, the respected jurist said the idea is to give a “golden headshake” to employees over the age of 51 and others who want a lumpsum payment. But the steel mills should be converted into public-private partnerships.
