England captain Jos Buttler has been ruled out of the decisive ODI against Sri Lanka due to a hamstring injury.
The third and final match of the series is scheduled to be played at The Oval on Sunday. Jordan Cox is expected to take over wicketkeeping duties in Buttler’s absence, while Dan Lawrence has been added to the squad as cover.
Buttler sustained a problem with his left hamstring while attempting a run during the second ODI at Headingley on Thursday.
Despite the injury, he faced two more deliveries before retiring hurt. His 69-run knock was his highest ODI score in three years, but England went on to lose the match by 16 runs.
The extent of Buttler’s injury is not yet known. Further assessment, including an MRI scan next week, is expected to provide a clearer indication of his recovery timeline.
Meanwhile, Lawrence has been called up following his impressive performances in the recent Test series against Pakistan.
The Surrey batter has also recorded his sixth first-class century of the season, strengthening his case for a return to the England setup.
England will enter the final ODI with the series finely poised, with Buttler’s absence leaving the side without its regular captain and wicketkeeper for the crucial encounter.
