Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi Ameer Monem Zafar along with a delegation, called on Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) Managing Director (MD) Salahuddin and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Asadullah Khan to demand early resolution of the issues surrounding the water and sewerage crises in the mega city.

The meeting was held at the KWSC corporation headquarters, here on Wednesday. JI leaders, including Taufiquddin Siddiqui, EngrSaleemAzhar, QaziSadaruddin, ManzarAlam and others accompanied Monem Zafar during the meeting.Speaking on the occasion, Zafar reminded the KWSC authorities that the last meeting between the two sides had agreed to enhance cooperation between the corporation and local government representatives. However, he maintained, the decision was not followed in letter and spirit. As a result, Karachiites have been suffering due to water and sewerage issues.

The JI leaders also highlighted the issues of open sewerages and main holes, water crises in Malir and adjoining areas among other issues. Taufiquddin Siddiqui told the KWSC that Malir and adjoining areas are kept deprived of water supply despite 90 percent recovery of bills.

Sadaruddin highlighted that a considerable share of town’s budget was being exhausted to maintain the sewerage — an issue supposed to be addressed by the KWSC.On the other hand, the KWSC authorities assured the delegation led by Monem Zafar of full cooperation.

They said that the corporation compiled its budget on the town’s level. It has been decided that the SWSC official on town level would not be authorized to use the budget on his or her own, the authorities said, adding that instead the work proposals would be brought to the MD and the higher authorities would issue orders on the proposals in the light of recommendations provided by towns.

The MD and the CEO asked the JI leaders to provide townwise lists of issues so that all of them could be addressed in a proper manner. The authorities told the delegation that the corporation has a capacity of manufacturing almost 25 to 30 thousands covers of main holes a year. He said that the KWSC will issue the cover once demands are reached from all towns.

Talking about the Malir issue, the CEO said that the K-Electric carry out power suspension to Damloti Pumping Station for 18 hours a day. He said that the pumping station could not be run on diesel for 18 hours a day. He further said that the KE has already been requested not to carryout load shedding on the station but the request fell on deaf ears.
