Jamaat-e-Islami has vehemently opposed the recent surge in gas prices, highlighting concerns over its impact on the public and traders. The party has urged the Sindh government to ensure prioritized gas supply to prevent adverse effects on Karachi’s commercial and industrial activities.
In a public hearing organized by the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) at the head office of Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) in Karachi, Jamaat-e-Islami’s Karachi Deputy President Imran Shahid represented the citizens and traders. He strongly objected to the proposed increase of Rs. 324 per MMBTU (Million British Thermal Units) in gas prices by Sui Southern Gas Company, citing its potential burden of over Rs. 79 billion on consumers. Shahid pointed out that gas prices had already surged three times in the past year, exacerbating the financial strain on the public. Emphasizing the detrimental impact of further price hikes on both consumers and industrial activities, Shahid urged Chairman OGRA Masroor Khan to prioritize the provision of gas to Sindh under Article 158 of the Constitution.
He stressed that since 60% of the country’s gas production originates from Sindh, it is imperative to address the issue of gas load shedding in the province, particularly in Karachi, which serves as the industrial and commercial hub of Pakistan. Shahid highlighted Karachi’s pivotal role in Pakistan’s economy, contributing 55% of the country’s exports and generating 65% of tax revenue. He underscored the urgent need to explore new gas reserves and expedite efforts to overcome the challenges hindering exploration activities.
The call to prioritize gas supply to Sindh and the rejection of further gas price hikes underscore Jamaat-e-Islami’s commitment to safeguarding the interests of the public and promoting economic stability in the region.
